2021-09-01

The new "Series" section of the Taipei Golden Horse Film Project Promotion (FPP) was introduced last year to widespread industry acclaim. This year, Series attracted submissions from nine countries and regions, including many projects headlined by renowned filmmakers, producers and screenwriters. Following an intensely competitive review process, a total of 19 standout projects have been selected.

This year’s Series selections are diverse in genre and insightful in observation. They include Mixologist, a bartending drama headed by Golden Horse Best Leading Actor winner Mo Tzu-yi and director LOU Yi-an; CF, a comedic look at the absurdities of the advertising industry directed by husband-and-wife team Arvin CHEN and Sunny YU; Keeping Mum, an exposé of online fame and the dark side of family, led by the brother-and-sister duo of director Nelson YEH and producer YEH Tan-ching; Jin Xiu, LIN Han’s dream-chasing tale set in the world of handmade wedding gowns; The Executioner, a deep dive into the inner turmoil of officers who carry out the death penalty, co-written and co-directed by Jenny SHEN and Rady FU; and Ritalin, Hong Kong director LI Cheuk-fung’s daring exploration of distortions in Hong Kong’s education system.

Exciting adaptations include Not a Murder Mystery, helmed by The Silent Forest director KO Chien-nien and adapted by LIN Pin-chun from the novel of the same name by LI Tung-hao; Show On, a portrayal of the blogger life by Heavy Craving director HSIEH Pei-ju; and Hello, I’m the Undertaker, the series adaptation of the popular book and stage show by Leaving Virginia director LIN Li-shu. In addition, there are two animated series projects: The Heroes of East Zhou, an adaptation of the internationally acclaimed manga series by CHEN Uen, directed by Barkley filmmaker CHIU Li-wei; and Guebo, a monster-themed series co-directed by Taiwan’s SU Chun-hsu and Japan’s SOETA Kazuhiro.

There are also several selections with eye-catching thematic settings, including Mist, an investigative crime drama directed by Hate the Sin, Love the Sinner filmmaker Henri CHANG; The Renegades, an epic that spans from Taiwan’s White Terror period to the country’s "black gold" era, co-produced by veteran producer CHEN Chi-yuan; hái-íng, a war crimes court drama helmed by Home Sick director SUN Chieh-heng; The Last Night of Beauty Karaoke, in which a mysterious karaoke machine transports us back to Keelung Harbor during its prosperous 1980s era, adapted from the popular musical by Golden Bell Award-winning screenwriter ZHAN Jie; and In Time for Murder, a fantastical time-traveling murder investigation series directed by Singapore’s Doreen YAP. Furthermore, there is WANG I-fan’s Temple of Devilbuster, Leo WANG’s The 9th Precinct (Series), and CHEN Ta-pu’s The Cleaner, all of which expand on their source material to deliver highly-anticipated exciting new stories.

To assist these outstanding Chinese-language series to secure financial resources and market exposure, the Golden Horse FPP has once again teamed up with the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) to allow the selected Taiwanese production teams or international co-production teams with Taiwanese elements to not only attend the November 11-12 Taiwan Creative Content Fest organized by TAICCA to meet with international investors and co-production partners, but also to apply for TAICCA’s “Creative Content Development Program — Script Development Support” and “Taiwan’s International Co-funding Program” initiatives. Projects that meet TAICCA’s requirements can receive up to TWD 2 million in development support and up to USD 300,000 in production investment funding.

The 2021 Golden Horse FPP will take place in Taipei from November 22 to 24. The winners will be announced at the closing ceremony on November 24.
