Set in the 1990s, Lu Xiaolu just graduated from a technical school and currently works in a chemical factory. He lacks the required skills so he is practically fooling around at work. He falls in love with a beautiful girl called Bai Lan, but eventually she goes to the post-graduate school in Shanghai, leaving Lu behind.
