The Assassin

8th century China. 10-year-old Nie Yinniang is sent away to a nun who trains her as an assassin. One day, she is brought back by her mistress to the land of her birth, with orders to kill the man to whom she was promised. After 13 years of exile, the young woman must confront her parents, her memories and her long-repressed feelings.



HOU Hsiao-hsien

Hou Hsiao-hsien's early works The Boys from Fengkuei and A Summer at Grandpa's attracted international attention at the French Festival des 3 Continents. The Time to Live and the Time to Die was awarded at the IFFR and Berlinale; Dust in the Wind  also acclaimed by the critics. In 1989, A City of Sadness won the Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival. The Puppetmaster, Flowers of Shanghai, Millennium Mambo, and Three Times were shown at the Festival de Cannes, where The Assassin won him the Best Director.
