Danno, a young samurai, is charged with watching over Toda, an older samurai writing a history of the province, who has been ordered to commit seppuku in three years.Danno soon discovers this man is a beacon of wisdom,justice and self-sacrifice and attempts to clear Toda. Then he is entwined in palace politics and in love with Toda's daughter.
