Cute Girl
The directing debut of Hou Hsiao-hsien is typical of Taiwanese commercial movies in 1980: a frisky romcom about a young land surveyor seducing the daughter of a wealthy industrialist away from her uptight fiancé Ma, guided by the song of an oriole. Countryside settings and the role of a bratty orphan boy suggest where Hou's heart really lies.
