When a missionary named Robert begins teaching the local kids in the shantytown of Katwe to play chess, 10-year-old Phiona displays an instant affinity for the game. Despite her mother's worries, Phiona is triumphing at local tournaments, and she begins to realise that she might also be able to help her family find a better life.
