Karin, a girl in the bloom of innocent sensuality and the apple of her father's eye, is raped and murdered by a group of savage goat herders. When the killers unwittingly seek refuge in the farmhouse belonging to Karin's father Töre, the young boy who has watched his brothers perform the act suffers along with them Töre's terrible revenge. Bergman's medieval forays derive their strange, mythic beauty from early Christianity while also questioning morals, vengeance and religious beliefs.
