Goro and Gun, two truck drivers, drop in at a deserted ramen noodle shop run by a widow, Tampopo. Their advice starts Tampopo's quest to make a perfect bowl of ramen.Tampopo (Dandelion) resembles Western films with a hero in a cowboy hat, a fight with some thugs and a man leaving a romance behind. It features bizarre and sensual stories that draw on vast culinary knowledge. Moreover, the film spurred a ramen boom in Japan at the time of its release and became a box-office success in the US.

Itami Juzo was born in Kyoto in 1933. His father was the renowned film director, Itami Mansaku. After working as a film actor, designer, essayist, producer of TV documentaries and commercials and editor-in-chief of magazine mon oncle, he made his debut as a film director in 1984 with the highly acclaimed The Funeral. Itami had directed ten films before his death in 1997. |
