Following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, Fern packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. Nomadland features real nomads Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells as Fern's mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West.

Chloé Zhao was born in Beijing and received an MFA in Film Production from NYU. Her feature debut, Songs My Brothers Taught Me, was nominated for Caméra d'Or at Cannes 2015. Her film Nomadland won the Golden Lion, making her the first Chinese woman director to receive the prize, and went on to win the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director, making her the first woman of color to win the latter. |
