Mikolás and his brother Adam rob travellers for their tyrranical father Kozlík. One day, their task was heard by the King. Kozlík prepares for the wrath of the King, and pressures his neighbor Lazar for alliance. Persuasion fails, and in vengeance Mikolás abducts Lazar's daughter Marketa. The King, meantime, dispatches an army and Lazar will be called upon to join hands against Kozlik.

Born in 1924, František Vláčil was a Czech film director, painter and graphic artist. Selected works include the highly acclaimed Marketa Lazarová (1967), Shadows of a Hot Summer (1978), winner of Crystal Globe at Karlovy Vary, and The White Dove (1960), selected by Venice Film Festival. He received the Czech Lions Artistic Achievement Awards in 1994, and Special Prize for Outstanding Contribution to the World Cinema at Karlovy Vary in 1998.
