Lin Tai-yu is a granddaughter of Dowager Lady Chia who lived in the distinguished Jung Kuo Mansion in the capital, is also Chia Pao-yu's cousin. One year, Tai-yu's mother died of illness, 50 Dowager Lady Chia took her to Jung Kuo mansion in her mercy. Afterwards, Tai-yu and Pao-yu were getting along very well day and night, and deeply in love. At the time, their relative Mrs. Hsueh's daughter, Pao-chai was preparing to enter the court as a woman scholar, so they went to the capital and lived in Chia's Mansion. However, the three youngsters' love and destiny must be totally determined by the hierarchs of the Jung Kuo Mansion represented by Dowager Lady Chia. Following what the feudal morality demanded, she chose Pao-chai rather than Tai-yu, resulting in the tragedy of the three youngsters: Tai-yu died with hatred for her love, Pao-yu finally left and followed Buddhism, Pao-chai got along helplessly and desolately for the rest of her life.
