Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival Executive Committee announced today (September 5) the recipient of this year’s Special Contribution Award, veteran film editor LIAO Ching-sung, in recognition of his constant effort and dedication in filmmaking and film education. The award will be presented on the 55th Golden Horse Awards Ceremony on November 17th at National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei, Taiwan.

Liao started his career in the 70s as film editor, and expanded to producing in the late 90s. With his diverse and sophisticated editing skills, Liao works with director Hou Hsiao-hsien over the past three decades throughout Hou’s creations up to date, starting from debut feature Cute Girl (1980), early works A Time to Live, A Time to Die (1985), Dust in the Wind (1986), milestones A City of Sadness (1989), The Puppetmaster (1993) to the latest The Assassin (2015). In addition to the long-term collaboration with Hou, Liao Ching-sung also worked with Edward Yang [That Day, on the Beach (1983), Taipei Story (1985) and The Terrorizers (1986)] and Wan Jen [Ah Fei (1983) and Super Citizen Ko (1995)], which listed him among the pioneers for Taiwan New Cinema movement. 

Liao is still active in filmmaking and has participated in over twenty films in the past year. He especially involves in helping young and new filmmakers to pass on his valuable experience in practice, through teaching, editing to producing.

Chairman of Golden Horse Film Festival Ang Lee congratulates Liao as “a truly respectable filmmaker worthy of this recognition”. Liao expressed his gratitude with modesty and promised to dedicate himself to cinema: “There are many more movies for me to work on, and I wish to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award when I get older”.
