The Golden Horse Film Project Promotion (FPP) announced today its selections for 2018. This year, FPP selected 35 projects out of 361 submissions from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, the United States, France, the Netherlands, and Romania. The selections include new projects from former Golden Horse Awards nominees HUANG Hui-chen, Umin Boya, CHU Hsien-che and HUANG Xi. Executive producers guiding the new generation include Golden Horse Awards winners HOU Hsiao-hsien, Stanley KWAN and LEE Lieh, while actress-singer and TV producer Ruby LIN is making her first foray into film production. Golden Bell Awards winner CHEN Wei-ling and Cannes Un Certain Regard invitee, Singaporean director BOO Jun-feng, will also be vying for the TWD 1,000,000 Grand Prize. In addition, former Golden Horse Best Adapted Screenplay winner HUANG Shi and Best New Performer nominee Ado’ Kaliting Pacidal will be competing in the FPP for the first time as directors.

Last year, the FPP introduced its well-received Work In Progress (WIP) strand, which seeks to help complete films that are currently in production, secure post-production funding, and find distribution and collaboration opportunities. The 7 WIP selections this year feature senior executive producers LIAO Ching-sung and Terence CHANG and projects directed by former Golden Horse Awards winners Midi Z and CHANG Jung-chi.

This year’s Selected Projects are stacked with industry heavyweights. They include the documentary LOMA-Our Home, executive produced by HOU Hsiao-hsien and directed by HUANG Hui-chen; Linsen N. Rd., executive produced by LEE Lieh and directed by Umin Boya; and My Daughter’s Daughter and Battleground Massacre, directed respectively by former Golden Horse Best New Director nominees HUANG Xi and CHU Hsien-che. There is also Kipahpah Ima, an inspiring musical executive produced by Wolf CHEN and CHANG Feng-mei and directed by YANG Chih-lin. Two films taking on the genre are The Medium: The Flaming Exorcist Sinner, directed by David CHANG, and Hotel of Horror, directed by Taipei Film Awards Best Short Film winner WANG I-fan and Myna Bird directed by XU Wei. Golden Bell winner CHEN Wei-ling, who recently received critical acclaim for the TV series On Children, is tackling the big screen again with And the Winner is…. Making their directorial debuts are former Golden Horse Best Adapted Screenplay winner HUANG Shi with Nana in the Real and Best New Performer nominee Ado’ Kaliting Pacidal with Ru-Ni and Kupe.

As the Golden Horse Film Academy celebrates its 10th anniversary, many academy alumni have delivered eye-catching feature projects this year. These include LU Po-shun’s Love in the City of Ashes, QIU Sheng’s Daddog, CHEUNG Chin-hung’s The Revenge, KANG Liang’s The Chase in the West, JOW Zhi-wei’s Tomorrow is a Long Time, and CHEN Tao’s The Summer Factory.

BOO Jun-feng, whose film Apprentice (2016) screened in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, is participating in FPP for the first time with his new project, Dominion. Other highly anticipated projects include Jun LI’s Drifting and REN Xia’s A Life of Papers from Hong Kong, and CHONG Keat-aun’s The Southern Cursed Nail and Jess TEONG’s Love is in the Hair from Malaysia. Hailing from Macau this year is Emily CHAN’s Madalena.

Many new-generation directors have been blessed with the guidance of high-profile and experienced producers: Golden Horse Best Director winner Stanley KWAN, who regularly grooms new protégés, is the executive producer on Guangzhou Lover (directed by WANG Jiang-yong), while actor and TV producer Ruby LIN teams up with Shuttle Life (2017) producer Jin ONG for the Malaysian gender-themed film, Miss Andy (directed by Teddy CHIN). Senior independent film producers Patrick Mao HUANG and SHEN Yang are the respective executive producers of the sci-fi rom-com The Boy from Pluto (directed by CHUANG Shiang-an) and the crime thriller May I Borrow Two Eggs? (directed by ZHANG Bing-jian). SHAN Zuo-long is producing Borrowed Time (directed by CAI Jie), and CHENG Rui, who produced Mosaic Portrait, will be guiding director ZENG Zeng on the project Dust to Dust. Meanwhile, My Father is a Policeman (directed by LIU Yanwenjun) is produced by NAI An, a long-time collaborator of renowned Chinese filmmaker LOU Ye.

This year’s international collaborations include Fiona ROAN Feng-i’s American Girl (Taiwan-US co-production) andYANG Zheng-fan’s The Stranger (China-France-Netherlands co-production). Three highly creative animated films have also been selected: Dragon’s Delusion (directed by CHANG Kong-khong) from Hong Kong, and Kairyu Kai Kai (co-directed by HUANG Shih-ming and CHAO Ta-wei) and Mayfly Island (directed by LIN Cheng-ting) from Taiwan.

The selected WIP projects that will be receiving assistance this year include Burning Secrets, by The Road to Mandalay director Midi Z; We are Champions, by Touch of the Light director CHANG Jung-chi; Boluomi, directed by LAU Kek-Huat Vera CHEN and executive produced by LIAO Ching-sung; WINGS OVER EVEREST, directed by Fay YU and executive produced by Terence CHANG; Heavy Craving, directed by HSIEH Pei-ju; Changfeng Town, directed by WANG Jing; and Blue Island, the new documentary film by Golden Horse Best Documentary nominee CHAN Tze-woon.
