【Scriptwriting: LI Qiang】
Writing Screenplay: A Task of Unique Craftsmanship
Golden Horse Awards winner for Best Adapted Screenplay LI Qiang will use the belletristic and artistic The Golden Era, the commercially-focused So Young, and the crime drama The Shadow of the Ashes (in post-production) as examples, to explore how to deconstruct genre films from various aspects such as theme selection, plot structure, character design and dialogue to prompt each aspiring screenwriter to find their own writing path.

【Action Choreography: Stephen TUNG Wai】
The Beauty of Action Comes from the Essence of Drama
Action choreographer Stephen TUNG Wai, who sets a record of 11 nominations at Golden Horse Awards, will make the most of his 40 years of martial arts experience to get right down to the fundamentals: how to work closely with other departments, repeated discussions with the director, cinematographer and actors, along with careful consideration over fine details such as costume and production design, how the entire production team pool their collective efforts to deliver the best possible viewing experience.

【Sound Effects: TU Duu-chih】
Not Just The Ears: The Basics from Technical Skills to Artistry
TU Duu-chih is the mind and ear behind the “sound” of numerous Chinese-language films. With The Bold, The Corrupt, and The Beautiful and The Great Buddha+ as examples, he will demonstrate how sound can configure the strands of a film and become the notes that convey the film’s ideas to the audience. He will also examine the seemingly basic yet often overlooked concepts that save time and money, and give more freedom to artistic creativity, making sound something beyond.

【Art Direction/Costume Design: Pan LAI】
First I Wanted to Tell a Good Story, Now I Want to Convey Thoughts
Five-time Golden Horse Awards-winner Pan LAI takes Center Stage and Lust, Caution as examples, to elaborate how to capture and recreate characters and situations from history and daily life that speak to our hearts and aspirations. And then, through the practical application of inner and outer focus, color and empty spaces, convert internal emotions into unforgettable images on the screen.

【Cinematography: Mark LEE Ping-bing】
Light and Shadow: Subtle Yet Powerful
Mark LEE Ping-bing has won seven Golden Horse Awards, as well as recognitions at Cannes and Berlinale. He will cover both the humanistic and practical aspects of cinematography, starting with thorough script reading. It will show you how to turn words into images, capture the consciousness and imagination of the director, and then develop into a visual concept and style. It also discusses how cinematographers deal with unexpected occurrences and materialize the abstract concept.

【Film Editing: David RICHARDSON】
Searching for a Moment in an Expansive Galaxy
The uncanny art of film editing can only be truly appreciated by personally being in the editing room. Two-time Golden Horse Awards-winner David RICHARDSON will take the Milkyway Image films Drug War and Triviṣa as examples, to examine a “typical film job” scenario from initial set-up to final cut. David will use actual footage and editing software to demonstrate the topics.

【International Production: Charles GILLIBERT】
The Road to Becoming a Producer of Auteur Cinema
Charles GILLIBERT, who has long worked with renowned filmmakers like Abbas KIAROSTAMI, Olivier ASSAYAS and Xavier DOLAN while also discovered talented new directors, will explain the key tasks of a producer on an art house film, such as selecting subject matter, allocating budget, financing and international distribution, sharing his strategies and tricks of the trade. In addition, he will offer his analysis of the current international market for Chinese-language films.

【Project Development: CHANG Chia-lu】
Different Reasons for Success, Similar Reasons for Failure
With three recent projects—Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings, The Shadow Play, and a yet-to-be-titled crime thriller—as the starting point, renowned producer CHANG Chia-lu examines the different phases in the arduous film development process, from selecting the subject matter to developing the script to pre-production. Why do things that seemingly work suddenly become mired in obstacles or even fall apart completely? Avoiding the same mistakes is the first step toward success.

【Visual Effects: Ellen POON】
A Fantastical VFX Voyage with a Hollywood Guide
Visual effects that combine technology and art can be said to be one of the most important elements of modern film productions. Through popular films such as Monster Hunt 2 and Zootopia, Visual Effects Supervisor Ellen POON will look at the thought process of VFX, from pre-production to on-set supervision, production and delivery. Using actual examples of concepts, storyboards and shot progression, find out the answers to these questions as well as the key points you must grasp at each stage of the VFX production process.

【Animation: Shinsuke NONAKA】
An Inside Look at Ghibli
With examples from the traditional hand-drawn animation of Spirited Away to the unique production approach of The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, Shinsuke NONAKA from Studio GHIBLI will explain the animated film production process and touch on practical aspects such as merchandising, related audio and video reproductions, and international distribution.
