2019 Golden Horse Film Project Promotion fires up with 40+8 projects

The 2019 Golden Horse Film Project Promotion (FPP) received a total of 382 submissions from 15 countries/regions; eventually, 40 film projects were selected. First introduced in 2017 to widespread acclaim, the Work in Progress (WIP) section of the FPP assists film projects that have completed or are about to complete shooting with securing post-production financing, distribution and various collaboration opportunities. This year’s WIP features 8 outstanding films from a diverse range of genres.
This year’s selections are filled with powerhouse projects, including the documentary Hypnos (dir. HO Chao-ti, Turning 18); Hunter Brothers, a tale about two brothers who end up on different paths, helmed by documentary director SU Hung-en, as well as feature films Day Off (dir. FU Tien-yu, My Egg Boy) and Out of the Science (dir. LIEN Yi-chi, Let’s Cheat Together). LEE Chung and Jim WANG, both former Golden Horse Awards nominees for Best New Director, bring their respective new films, Mr. Li and My Incredible Mom. LIN Yu-hsien, who won the Golden Horse Awards with Jump! Boys, is teaming up with KITAMURA Toyoharu to direct the romantic comedy Youth 18x2. Toe YUEN and SUNG Hsin-yin, both winners of Best Animation Feature, bring us new animated work A Mighty Adventure and the live-action feature Love is a Bitch, based on the true story of Japan’s “Black Widow”, while Hero of Heroes (dir LIU Yu-shu, LIN Yu-chun & CHUANG Yung-hsin), the big screen adaptation of the classic Jhuge-Shiro comic book series aims to build a uniquely Taiwanese dream of heroism in 3D animation. Taiwan’s Rina TSOU, Japan’s KINOSHITA Yusuke and Hong Kong’s WONG Fei-pang, all directors of the pan-Asia Ten Years franchise, bring the respective new feature-length films: Under Her Name, Gravity of the God, and A Burning Worm.
In-depth social observation remains a crucial inspiration for filmmakers: Impostor (dir. HUANG Jun-jie) follows a woman who tries to steal back the child she gave birth to after acting as a surrogate mother; No Money, No Rent! (dir. CHEN Yi-liang) tells the story of the homeless-turned-squatters in an unsafe building; Males (dir. YANG Qi) is a parable about a boy and a man that revolves around desire and violence. In the meantime, Hong Kong directors reflect on the past-present-future of the city with empathy and humanity, like Early Landings (dir. Jun LI), No News is True News (dir. CHAN Chi-fat), A Future Found (dir. Amos WHY) and Unclaimed (dir. Steve LAW).
Continued with this year’s success of Taiwanese genre films, many new directors take on the challenge of it, including YouTuber (dir. Shaun SU), 96 Minutes (dir. HUNG Tzu-hsuan), Incantation (dir. Kevin KO), Blue Mars (dir. Simon HUNG Sheng-yang), Run Zombie Run (dir. LIN Kuan-fu), Chi: The Method of Breathing (dir. LIU Yi), The Birdwoman (dir. YANG Ting-chi), The Bloodfolded (dir. LU Hsin-yen & YIN Chen-hao), and The Five Poisons (dir. TSAI Yi-fen & HAO Fang-wei). There is suspense, action, thriller, sci-fi, horror, martial-arts and romance, triggering all senses of the audience.
The Golden Horse Film Academy has delivered impressive results in recent years, with many participants receiving recognition at major film festivals. Though Academy alumni are not guaranteed selection, several of them have managed to get into this year’s FPP, including CHANG Teng-yuan’s new film focused on new immigrants, Days Before the Millennium; TSAO Shih-han’s Beautiful Days in the South centers around a boy’s coming-of-age story; Sky GAN Yu-long delivers the Malaysian project Cul De Sac.
This year’s selected projects also emphasize on the diversity of ethnicity and cultures: France’s Vanished Days (dir. Morgan SIMON) is adapted from true story during WWII; Singaporean director Boris BOO’s Paradise Island explores an experimental prison story; Macau’s Long Day, Long Night (dir. LAM Kin-kuan) and Malaysia’s Amphibian Life (dir. LEONG Tuck-fai) both focus on the unique workplace ecology of migrant workers; the Malaysia-Hong Kong co-production Hilang (dir. Kyo CHEN) and the Hong Kong-Indonesia co-production Masks (dir. Chris CHOW Chun) target at the subversion of existing genres. Japan’s Mr. Strawberry and Me, produced by Midnight Diner’s ENDO Hitoshi and directed by AZUMA Shinji, is an inspirational tale about a girl aspires to be a manga artist; and the Taiwan-UK co-production Salli (dir. LIEN Chien-hung) unfolds the story of a middle-aged chicken farmer venturing overseas to track down her online lover.
The resoundingly well-received WIP strand offers matching services for films in the shooting or post-production phase. This year the selections include LIAO Ming-yi’s IweirDo, a feature-length film shot by iPhone; Your Name Engraved Herein (dir. LIU Kuang-hui) a gay drama headlined by the star of Detention, TSENG Chin-hua; Golden Horse Awards nominee KO Chen-nien, Golden Horse Film Academy alumnus CHEN Yung-chi and theater-turned-film director LU Mian-mian present their first features Silent Etude, The Painting of Evil, and Mickey On The Road, respectively. Gatao: Path of Sorrow (dir. Ray JIANG) is a prequel in the popular Gatao film franchise. There are also two documentaries Green Jail, (dir. HUANG Yin-yu) and A Holy Family, (dir. Elvis LU).
The 2019 Golden Horse FPP will take place November 19th-21st in Taipei; the winner will be announced at the Closing Ceremony on November 21st.
